AN ART SHOW
October 18th - November 22nd, 2025

Our story begins at an art event at John de Wit’s Gallery: Cultus Bay Glass Art Gallery. John built the gallery and has always wanted it to be a place where artists starting out can have a gallery representation.
At the event. Laura is stationed at her sewing machine. Jean, painting at her easel. John hosted two more artists. A lively crowd of people streamed in during that Whidbey Working Artists weekend. After being asked by several visitors, Laura quickly set out a sign-up sheet of interested folks wanting to get together after the show. Deb and Liz were at the top of the list. A month passed until Jean and Deb met for coffee at the Flowers House Cafe. Liz and Laura joined in a few weeks after, and then all artists began to meet every other week at Jean’s house. Eventually, we all opened our homes to host the group get-togethers.
In our get-togethers, we talk about our art, lives, and life experiences. We used words to evoke a piece of art, we take classes together, explore materials, and teach one another techniques. We read art books and have meaty discussions about art. There’s a lot of laughter too.

John asked Jean to do a show in his gallery in October. “How about all four of us?” was her response. John gave it some thought “I like this idea”. His vision for the gallery has always been to help artists who don’t have representation in other galleries, who are starting out, and need a place to show their work. Jean’s passion has been to help grow art and artists wherever and whenever possible.
Having a show to work toward helped us focus as a group. We began in earnest to develop a body of work reflecting our interests, skills, and ways we want to have fun being creative. Laura, a mixed-media collage artist working with hand-painted

and monoprinted papers, textiles, and a sewing machine, is now exploring abstract painting on canvas. Liz, with a wonderful skill at drawing anything, is exploring the world of charcoal and abstract landscapes. Deb has been attracted to abstract painting for a long time, and has jumped into a body of work inspired by a class we took together. Jean is continuing to paint abstractly with oil, and is contemplating what drives the art of an artist.
Our show is the culmination of one year’s time together. It’s the beginning of our experience as artists working toward a shared passion. We enrich one another with what we bring to the table in both life and art. We look forward to showing our art, appreciating the work and skill it takes to be where we are on the journey together. We hope you enjoy and are inspired by this show: Side By Side.

My interest is in creating a locus where originality is supreme, and a belief that lasting value is generated by beauty and excellent craftsmanship. To this end I have worked at building a venue that serves the discerning customer, a place to watch and learn, appreciate, and hold dear to their heart.

CULTUS BAY GLASS | A Reason to Work
I had a dream to open a glass shop with an attached exhibit space for many years. The lure of an open and light-filled space to work, demonstrate, and sell under one roof was an idea that is primary to this craftsperson’s raison d‘travail. I recently had the opportunity to purchase a small piece of commercial property on South Whidbey Island. Here I have dedicated myself these last few years to making this art exhibit and work space a reality.
My vision includes original works from other artists and craftspeople, as well as my own: works in glass, clay, wood and paper holding court with the occasional presentation of the spoken word, the edible plant, and distilled liquor.
